Standard Mahjong Game Rules & Gameplay Procedures
The game begins with all mahjong tiles placed face-down on the table. Players use both hands to stir and shuffle the tiles thoroughly, disrupting their original order to achieve a completely random mix. This fundamental pre-game step is defined as tile shuffling.
Building Tile Walls
After thorough shuffling, each player gets 36 tiles in total. Two tiles are stacked vertically to form a single pier, with each player forming 18 piers individually. Every player arranges their stacked piers into an independent tile wall in front of their seat. The four separate tile walls are then connected end to end, forming a square enclosure around the central gaming area.
Drawing Tiles
In accordance with official national standard mahjong rules, the dealer rolls two dice to decide the starting position for tile distribution. The sum of the two dice points acts as the calculation standard. Starting from the dealer’s position, players count counterclockwise based on the total points to locate the starting tile wall. On the confirmed wall, players count off the corresponding number of piers from right to left. Starting right after the counted piers, the dealer draws two sets of stacked tiles first. The remaining players then take tiles in clockwise sequence. This picking process repeats three times until each player has 12 tiles in hand. Next, the dealer skips one pier and draws two extra top tiles, while each of the other three players draws one extra tile. This leaves the dealer with 14 tiles and all other players with 13 tiles, marking the start of official gameplay.
Tile Arrangement, Hand Evaluation and Flower Tile Replacement
Once the tile drawing stage is completed, players sort and tidy up their hand tiles to analyze card trends and potential winning combinations. Any player holding flower tiles must perform flower supplementation in turn. The dealer takes the lead to draw supplementary tiles from the rear end of the tile wall, followed by the other three players in order. If new flower tiles are obtained during the supplementation process, additional replacements will be processed after all players finish their current round of flower mending.
Gameplay and Tile Discarding
The core gameplay revolves around repeated tile drawing and discarding rounds. The dealer initiates the game by discarding the first tile. The full gaming process includes drawing new tiles, discarding redundant tiles, as well as standard moves such as chow, pong, open kong and concealed kong, alongside ongoing flower tile supplementation. The round continues circulating until one player achieves a valid winning hand or the game ends in a stalemate.
